Start with clean hair, either towel-dried or fully dry depending on how much control you want. Scoop a small amount from the jar - less than you think you need - and rub it between your palms until it turns creamy. Work it evenly through the hair, concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends, then sculpt with your fingers or a comb. Add a touch more only where you want extra grip. It stays reworkable, so you can restyle with your fingers later in the day.

Three systems overlap in this wax. The wax phase - synthetic wax, carnauba, beeswax and glyceryl stearate - is what you feel as body: it softens at skin temperature so it spreads, then firms up again on the hair to hold the shape. PVP works alongside it as a drying film-former, laying an invisible flexible layer over the strands that keeps separation from collapsing, which is why the hold lasts without needing a hard, crunchy cast. Kaolin then does the visual job, sitting on the surface to absorb oil and diffuse light so the whole thing reads dry and matte rather than waxy. Cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20 and PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil emulsify the waxes into water, which is what makes this lighter than a traditional oil pomade and easier to shampoo out. Shea butter and glycerin round the edges off, keeping the texture pliable and the hair from feeling stripped.
